Research on use of Smart Water Bottles in Care Homes

What is it

This document outlines the findings of web-research that LOTI commissioned in October 2020 on the use of Smart Water Bottles (those which include a mechanism to remind users to drink) to improve hydration and help reduce hospital admissions of care home residents.

Why have we created it?

This research was conducted to help inform a specific pilot being proposed by boroughs as part of LOTI’s work on Assistive Technology. A 2018 study showed that 20% of older people living in UK care homes were dehydrated. The hypothesis of this work is that smart water bottles may have a role to play in alleviating this issue.

Who should use it?

The report may be of interest to Assistive Technology Leads and colleagues working in adult social care.
