Guide to Lending and Gifting Digital Devices

This toolkit takes key learnings from current device lending and gifting schemes and provides advice for London councils and other organisations that wish to set up similar schemes. Please note, the recommendations in this guide are not exhaustive and it does not cover how to source digital devices.

How to set up, manage and evaluate your scheme. 1. Lend or gift: Ascertain the need for digital devices in your borough so you can decide whether a lending or gifting scheme is the best option. 2. Smartphones, laptops or tablets: Consult with industry experts, community groups and your IT department to identify the most appropriate devices and software. 3. Internal or external resources: Decide who will run the scheme (e.g. internal teams or a partner organisation) and, if required, recruit local volunteers. 4. Additional support: Consider providing additional support, such as digital skills training and safety advice, so that your beneficiaries get the most out of their devices. 5. Measuring success: Evaluate your scheme to make it more effective and efficient and to gather evidence for future funding.
